Marriage and Family Counseling Degree Programs in New Jersey

All marriage and family therapists must meet state licensing requirements. To qualify for licensure, one must have a master’s degree and at least two years of supervised clinical experience. In addition to these requirements, a marriage and family therapist must also successfully complete a designated exam. All licensed marriage and family therapists must participate in yearly continuing education courses to retain their license. The state allows individuals who have degrees in a related field to pursue licensure, provided they have completed equivalent coursework to what is found in a marriage and family therapy master’s program.

Kean University

This school is located in Union and is the state’s third-largest public institution. Through the Nathan Weiss Graduate College, students can pursue a Professional Diploma in Marriage and Family Therapy. This professional training program consists of 66 credits and meets the educational requirements that are required to achieve licensure as a marriage and family therapist in New Jersey. Incoming learners who have earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree are eligible for the program, and students who enter the program without a master’s degree receive a Master of Arts in Psychology with a specialization in psychological services after completing 33 credits of required coursework. Students enrolled in this professional diploma program must participate in a two-semester internship that requires the completion of 500 client contact hours and 100 hours of direct supervision. Courses cover learning theory and applications, statistical methods, family counseling and marital therapy theories/techniques.

Seton Hall University

South Orange‘s Seton Hall University was established in 1856 and offers a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy degree program that prepares students for licensure. The program requires students to complete 60 credits and 500 hours of clinical training. The Educational Specialist in Marriage and Family Therapy degree program is intended for students who have a master’s degree and would like to specialize in marriage and family therapy. This 39-credit program also requires students to complete 500 hours of direct contact with clients and prepares graduates to become licensed in the state. These are the only two programs in New Jersey that are accredited by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. The Professional Diploma in Marriage and Family Therapy is intended for professionals who already have a license-eligible degree but would like to receive marriage and family therapy training before beginning work in the field.

The College of New Jersey

This option is intended for counselors who already have a master’s degree in a different area and are interested in the marriage and family therapy specialization.
